At Last! At Last! - A new Hash Tee-Shirt that fits. (Maverick, take note!)
The pack set off late from the pier – with a 20 minute boat ride ahead of them – only to turn back for some late stragglers. Rod (the Bug) Turner was notable for his lack of alacrity to sprint down the pier to try and catch the boat, perhaps hoping that failure to board would represent some sort of honourable discharge from actually doing the run.
Setting off again, the Monday night pack once again gave a convincing impression of the last boat leaving Vietnam, perhaps in pre-cognition of Hare - Frisky’s next overseas posting. Many of the boat passengers were given stimulating douches of healthy Chao Phraya water.
The run set off well enough, around 6:00 pm and initially the pack stayed close enough together, with the usual catalogue of lost paper, false trails, general incompetence and lack of calling much in evidence - as usual. One interesting touch (a Frank-enstein foible perhaps?) was a double check on opposite sides of a klong with nary a bridge in sight. This did confuse the pack for a while.
As dusk began to fall, the eagle-eyed FRBs surged ahead leaving the lame, the blind and the lazy to stumble around at the rear of the pack.
On getting back to the river (which astonishingly all but one – independent - Hasher managed to do), the Hares were waiting for us, not only with cool drinks but - joy of joy, and a veritable master-stroke – ice cold Margueritas which really touched the spot, and quelled any dissent from the late arrivals.
Your eagle-eyed Scribe noted that some of the Hash ladies had filled their ½ litre water bottles with this magic elixir before boarding the boat, so that – while elegantly sipping their water, and giving the impression of modest sobriety - were, actually, getting deliciously hammered on the return trip!
On our return to the run-site, excellent snacks were available including some tasty Dutch cheeses and dips. A fine memorial tee-short was also handed out.
The circle went ahead with the usual high level of Hash justice being meted out to all and sundry. POTW was awarded to a visiting American couple who had – perhaps unwisely – vouchsafed to one of the RA’s spies that they were on their Honeymoon, thereby guaranteeing them a virtual shoo-in for the award.
All in all, a most enjoyable run, with super cocktails, snacks, and a great tee shirt. Many thanks to our two Hares, Frisky and Noriega, with a particularly big THANK YOU to Frisky who may be absent from Bangkok for a while, such that this could be the last run she sets for the Monday pack for some time.
